During the sixties, Abdel Raouf Shamoun’s method was symbolist and
cubist in style. Shamoun’s current work is devoted to his
experiences in the Wihdat Refugee camp near Amman. Slabs of color
boldly applied, one against the other, create compositions of
motion and dynamic incidence. There is often an active centre with
the outer bounds of the painting possessing larger less active
shapes. Shamoun feels that he is cleansing the trash of the
refugee camp out of himself. In doing so, he finds beauty in the
details of its living conditions. He ruminates over how the
orderly confusion of the camp is created and finds in it geometry
of ruins that inspire him.
