Babylon Art and Cultural Center
The Babylon hosts a gallery that has shown a wide variety of different kinds of visual art. Our focus is on showing art that is either politically motivated, or showing the work of artists that are marginalized in the art world. This includes showing the work of women, oppressed minorities, and youth, as well as providing a space where "emerging" artists can show. We also host Women Create! A women's artists collective, and hosted the Many Voices community forum, a group of artists who came together after September 11 and organized a show entitled "the Art of Resistance." We have hosted many different spoken word performances, many of them benefits for groups like The Women's Prison Book Project and the Revolutionary Afghan Women's Association. We also host musical performances and theater performances. The Babylon also provides space for political and community organizing meetings. We have also held film series that address the political situation in the world, creating discussion on our world through the use of film. We have so far focused on the Middle East but hope to expand this in the future. More than anything the goal of the Babylon is to help the people that come through the space realize their own humanity and potential as organizers, artists and human beings. We hope to provide a space that community members feel comfortable coming into and proposing and organizing the activities they want to see happen. We also deeply believe that art of all genres plays a vital role in changing society, and want to promote that through what we do.... More
