“Spirit of the Earth” Raed Issa 4/2001 The Artist: The first solo exhibit of the artist in twenty years, the exhibit showcases work born out of the artist’s 10 year long experience with the works of clay, mud and natural dyes. The exhibit features medium scale works, large-scale mural paintings and mud sculptures of human figures. Some of the works are part of the award winning series “Ana Ismaeel” that won the first prize at the Cairo Biennial Art fair ’98. The exhibit:
This exhibit showcases a beautiful series of delicate watercolors, as
well as a series of powerful etchings. The impact of Raed's work as a
field researcher on the Sakakini's "100 Shaheed-100 Lives" project is
apparent on some of the choice of subject matter, but in Raed's own
introspective and humane manner, away from a journalistic style of paint
by numbers symbolism.
"Raed's works are closely related to a dialogue he has with the landscape surrounding him showning detail in choosing the shapes and shades of his colors. His works are whole units that explicitly reveal the artists viewpoint to the observer." (Marwan Qassab Bashi). |
